h1 from the E-Learning Experience Blog

Building Better Moodle Rooms

These are my liveblogged notes from the Campus Technology webinar Building better Moodle rooms: Online strategies and best practices. My comments are in italics. Because it’s liveblogged, it’s mostly bullet points and some of it may be unclear. This webinar will be archived and should be available tomorrow; I’ll post the link then. Update: The archived presentation is now available.

Brief Intro: Microsoft Paint

Introduction to Microsoft Paint
Learn a simple program for adding visuals to your course. Note: This information was taken from a workshop and I could not locate the author's name.
Opening Screen:
When Microsoft Paint opens you will see three main areas of the workspace. The first, a large white space, is the canvas. This is where you will draw, paint, add text, and edit photographs. There is also a main toolbox area on the left and a color palette on the bottom.

Retouching a Photograph:
If you find the need to retouch a photograph, Microsoft Paint might be able to do the job as long as the retouching is simple and not extensive. In the following example, we are going to cover up an object in a photograph. Begin by opening the file.
1. To open a file, go to File > Open

2. Your file will open and be placed in the canvas area.

3. In this example, we have a picture of a puppy running in some grass. We are going to attempt to cover up the road area at the top of the photograph with some grass..
First, we need to make a selection. To do so we are going to click the Rectangular Selection tool that is located in the main toolbox.

4. Next, we are going to mouse over our canvas and draw a selection of grass that is near the road. This way the coloring of the grass will match more closely.

5. Once we have made our selection, we are going to Copy and Paste it by going to Edit > Copy and Edit > Paste.

6. Our selection is copied and pasted into the upper left-hand corner of our canvas. Simply mouse over to the center of the selection and drag it over the road. You can also resize the selection area if needed. It’s also a good idea to copy and paste multiple times and places to help blend.

7. The result:
We can see a slight line around the area that we pasted but it is likely that people who didn’t know what was there won’t be able to tell that we covered something up there.

Adding Text:
1. To add text in Paint first click on the type tool in the main toolbox.

2. Notice the two colorful shapes areas at the bottom of the main toolbox.
The top area, when selected, will place your text on a white background.

The bottom area, when selected, will place your text on a transparent background

In this example we would like the text over a transparent background so click on the bottom area.
3. Next, mouse over the canvas and draw a text box area for your text. Then click inside the text box and type your text.
4. You can change the font type, size, and style of your text. To do so you need to make sure that the Text Toolbar is visible. If the text toolbar is not visible, you can open it by clicking on View > Text Toolbar.

5. You can also change the color of your text by clicking on a color square in the color palette.
